These two designers sought to revolutionize the artistic codes of their era, which was almost entirely focused on Art Deco. But today, we will focus on two exceptional designers, whom we could even call legends given their contribution to design furniture: Charles and Ray Eames.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Charles<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Charles and Ray Eames, founders of the Eames Office<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Charles and Ray (whose real name was Bernice Alexandra Kaiser) met in 1941. Ray was still a young painting student, while Charles already enjoyed a certain reputation in architecture, his first profession, which led him to meet Le Corbusier. He was also recognized in the industrial design world, specializing in plywood molding. This specialization led him to work with the American army during World War II on various products, such as splints, stretchers, and experimental glider fuselages. During the same period, Charles Eames was recruited by MGM film studios to create sets, also made of plywood. <\/p>\n

It was from 1943 that the legend of Charles and Ray Eames began to be written, with the founding of their design studio, the Eames Office. <\/em>A specific mission was given to this new venture: to make design furniture accessible. To democratize it. More concretely, to produce the best for the greatest number at the lowest cost<\/em>. Among the first creations to emerge from this studio was the famous Lounge Chair Wood, the LCW armchair, exhibited in 1946 at the New Furniture Designed by Charles Eames<\/em> exhibition organized at MoMA. These unprecedented and unique pieces included the first plastic shell seat, made in a single block and without upholstery. These pieces continue to influence design today. <\/p>\n

\"Charles<\/strong><\/h3>\n

1948: The Eames couple creates their legend<\/strong><\/h3>\n

But it was in 1948 that the studio distinguished itself at the International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design<\/em>, organized by MoMA. The couple placed second in this competition after presenting the fiberglass armchair series Plastic Shell Group of Chair. <\/em>This series includes pieces that have become iconic, and widely copied, such as the RAR armchair<\/strong> (Rocking Armchair Rod) and the DAR armchair<\/strong> (Dining Armchair Rod). <\/p>\n

\"Charles<\/p>\n

These furniture pieces were subsequently produced in several versions with different colors, on casters, rocking, or swivel, and marketed by Herman Miller. The most famous is the DKR model, which uses the so-called “Eiffel Tower” base. <\/p>\n

It was also during this competition that the couple presented La Chaise, a lounge chair inspired by the sculpture Floating Figure<\/em> by sculptor Gaston Lachaise, which would only be produced from 1991 by Vitra.<\/p>\n

\"Charles<\/p>\n

However, his main success during his lifetime remains the creation of the Eames Lounge Chair<\/strong><\/a> in 1956, which revolutionized the concept of a relaxation seat, featuring plywood shells\u2014one of his earliest specialties.<\/p>\n

It is true that in the 1940s and 1950s, Charles Eames was primarily the one presenting products or taking public stances. Ray remained relatively discreet. However, it is now recognized that the couple worked very closely on their various creations, with Ray contributing her artistic creativity and Charles his technical expertise. <\/p>\n
