In this article, we will introduce you to the history of an iconic piece of furniture design: the Sella stool by Zanotta, created by the renowned designers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. It is iconic because this stool was considered an anomaly when it was first presented by the two designers in 1957, and today it is featured in numerous museum collections.
Sella, an Extraordinary Stool

The Sella stool leaves a strong impression upon first sight. One might even say that opinions are formed very quickly: either you love it, or you don’t love it at all. Notably, its mass production only began in 1983, nearly 30 years after its creation, precisely because of its original design—radical, some might say. There are indeed specific people, enthusiasts of the “little queen” (bicycles), who will adore it! But why cyclists? Take a close look at the seat of this Zanotta Sella stool: it is nothing more and nothing less than a bicycle saddle! Original, you might say, unique and emblematic, and comfortable in any case, if you were wondering.
The originality of this Sella stool is not limited to the saddle; its entire design invites contemplation. The black saddle is indeed fixed on a rather thick, varnished steel rod in a striking pink color. A pink that doesn’t hide, that fully reveals itself to catch the eye, adding a touch of non-conformity to this piece. As for the stool’s base, it is a cast iron hemisphere that might give the sensation of losing stability as soon as one sits on it. This will not be the case, of course.
A bicycle saddle, a rod, and a hemispherical base—in this Zanotta Sella stool, we find the work of the two designer brothers, adherents of “less is more,” constantly seeking clean lines and a minimalist approach.
The Sella Stool is Not Meant for Sitting!

Why did designers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni conceive this Sella stool? Simply to encourage movement! Not to remain seated on this piece, but rather to bring it to life by engaging with it: sitting, but not completely; adopting a half-standing, half-sitting position, ready to get up at any moment; resting on this stool for a few minutes… You understand, this Sella stool is not designed for long periods of sitting but to be used in various ways. It is therefore ideal for pairing with your kitchen countertop, where you might have a quick lunch or invite guests for a glass of wine.
